REM chant

for string quartet (2025)

I was thinking about Compline and night time, this space of of quiet and stillness, but also how sometimes the mind becomes very active at night, thoughts ruminating and circling around just before you sleep, and how your eyes move rapidly under your eyelids as you dream and your brain flickers with activity as your body lies still - all this movement beneath a static surface.

The piece quotes fragments of the first line of ‘In manus tuas’:

In manus tuas, Domine, commendo spiritum meum. (Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.)

Commissioned by Whiddon Autumn Festival and first performed by the Whiddon Autumn Festival String Quartet on 17 September 2025 during Compline (Night Prayer).
