skip
for string quartet (2021)
skip - to move along lightly, stepping from one foot to the other with a hop or bounce.
I like how the word describes physical movement but also the idea of jumping ahead in the narrative, like skipping a chapter in a book. I think I was mostly thinking about the first meaning, but after writing the piece I realised it kind of suggests both - lots of unrelated, unfinished ideas crammed into a short space., not really developing, just skipping., like a bored child.
Commissioned by Brother Tree Sound for Watford Palace Theatre’s Freelancers Season. Live premiered at St. Giles Cripplegate in London in June 2021 as part of Summer Music in City Churches festival.
